Clarkston Club have been running their scheduled shows since I can remember, and are a welcome relief on a Wednesday evening for fanciers to enjoy Open show competition and a general get together in the long dark nights of winter.
Unfortunately the first show had to be cancelled due to bird flu but thereafter they took place throughout November into December.
Its always a bonus to get a ticket against excellent competition. Full report with photos here
This year the hard work of managing the shows was club fanciers Craig Gillespie and Alex McPheat with Peter Stangoe always available to help.
The birdage was generally down on previous show but what has been happening with Covid then its expected. This didn't stop some cracking competition with fanciers travelling a fair distance to attend.
Thanks to all who supported the shows and those that helped sponsor the prize money, pies and raffle prizes.Im sure the members that attend appreciate your support.
The final show is the All winners, three tickets each handling class and a class for late bred youngsters carrying at least two nest flights. This was judged by Lewis McCalley.
I asked Lewis for some feedback on how he picks his winners.
When picking the prize winners I was just looking for the normal things. Nice tight, soft feathering, cleanliness, tight physique ,nice feathers of the face and head. Birds that sat nice on hand balance wise.
To separate the prize winners, all of which were lovely, it was more down to ideal weight and that's where the Best in Show hen ticked it. Unsure if the winners Wilson & Cairns are letting their birds out much just now or if she is just one of those birds that stays in trim naturally all year. She was the right weight for her shape and size in my opinion, not much would be needed to get her race fit.
I've no real experience of show pigeons and only judged a handful of times, rightly or wrongly I end up looking at the condition as I would with racing birds.
Thanks Lewis for the excellent feedback and your time to judge.
Thanks to all judges and non members who helped support the shows.
Well done to Robert Cairns(Wilson & Cairns) on winning Best in Show with his young hen and winning 19 tickets over the show series.
Robert had an excellent racing season with his name appearing on most SNFC results and winning the Old bird average in the Lanarkshire Social Circle club.
Tom Corrie Son G/son had a fine show programme winning 21 tickets over the series.
Mark Brady of Law & Brady also had a excellent show winning 13 tickets over the show series
