Lanarkshire Federation – Wakefield Old Bird 29/05/2021

This week we are in the West Yorkshire, Cathedral city of Wakefield.

The convoy of 4,800 birds and 30 other crates on board from other cubs/federation were liberated at 11 50hrs into a light south east wind for the 180 miles back into Scotland.                                  Full report with photos here

The winners made good speed with the winners recording just under 1490ypm for the flight of 3hrs 26 minutes for 175 miles.

This weeks winner resides in Overtown, located east of the River Clyde, one mile from Wishaw town.

That being John Menzies of Newmains Club takes top position 1st,Centre section,1st Open Federation with a cracking Check w/f  C Su 18 577918 .This pigeon is a top performer and has already won 2x1st prizes and 2x 2nd prizes in 8 races in his racing career.

He was bred by Dougie Barns of Crossgate in Fife from Tom Gilbertson of Carlyle lines. The lines being Son of California Bell x Jay Bee lines.

I took the time to call on John for a photo of him with his winner. He advised me that he races the pigeons on Natural system with training with local transport three times per week from around the Peebles area.(30 miles).John is unable to clean out due to health reasons so the lofts are on deep litter of droppings. The birds work well on it!

John enjoys his racing with his loft sitting overlooking the lovely Clyde valley.

No loft exercise is done around the loft.

The winner is a very tame bold headed pigeon with plenty of length and nice silky feathers. That was the furthest distance he had been in his racing career so far.

Thanks to John for his time and wish him well for the season.Well done John.

The race itself was a usual mixed bag with plenty of birds to come at clock ,two hours after timing. Reports that most birds worked in throughout the evening should see a good entry for our first pool race from Worksop next week..
